Biloxi oyster reef closed Thursday, Oct. 5

BILOXI, Miss. – Officials with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources announced that area V “A” closed to the harvest of oysters at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, due to the CMR-established quota for the area being reached or exceeded.

The Commission on Marine Resources set the 30 percent limit at its September meeting.

The 2017-2018 Mississippi oyster season opened for the harvest of oysters with a 30 percent quota by area. The season opened for tonging on Monday, Oct. 2. A total of 657 sacks was harvested over four days.

The conditionally approved area V “A” includes the Biloxi Bay Reef.

MDMR officials will open reefs in the western portion of the Mississippi Sound on Monday, Nov. 13. These reefs will be open for tonging and dredging with the 30 percent quota in effect.
