August Adventure Quencher: Turtles

BILOXI, Miss. – Want to learn more about turtles? Join the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve on Saturday for this month's Adventure Quencher on turtles.

The NERR, in partnership with Christina Mohrman of NOAA's Cooperative Science Center, is hosting a free, hands-on presentation featuring many local species of turtles.

Participants will learn how to identify and protect turtles, as well as adaptations turtles have that allow them to live on land or in fresh, salt or brackish water.

There will be activities for children, including the Turtle Hurdle, a crawl-through shrimp trawl with a turtle excluder, and a turtle-themed arts-and-crafts table. Participants can bring their crab traps and get a turtle excluder device so that diamondback terrapins won't get caught.

The presentation will be from 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, and children must be accompanied by an adult. It will be at the Grand Bay NERR's Coastal Resources Center, 6005 Bayou Heron Road, Moss Point, 39562 in southeastern Jackson County. For directions, go to www.grandbaynerr.org.
