Marine Patrol issues 5 BUIs over holiday weekend

BILOXI, Miss. – Marine Patrol officers with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources issued five boating under the influence citations during the Labor Day weekend.

In addition, officers issued 22 citations for boat and water safety violations between Saturday and Monday.

Officers checked a total of 367 boats and 1,314 people during the holiday weekend, said Keith Davis, chief of Marine Patrol.

He added that there was one accident involving a Jet Ski.

"Our goal for the Labor Day weekend was to have no fatalities and as few accidents as possible," Davis said. "Boaters along the Coast heeded our warnings and stayed safe while enjoying the holiday."

Citations were lower than the July Fourth holiday. During that weekend, officers arrested eight people for BUI and issued 28 citations.

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is dedicated to enhancing, protecting and conserving marine interests of the state by managing all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands and waterfront areas to provide for the optimal commercial, recreational, educational and economic uses of these resources consistent with environmental concerns and social changes.
