MDMR announces end of Phase I  emergency Oyster Recovery Program

BILOXI, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources will end Phase I of the emergency Oyster Recovery Program on Wednesday, Executive Director Jamie Miller said.
Miller said weather conditions and the availability of oysters were factors in making the decision.

“After evaluating what the fishermen harvested on Wednesday, we realized that the majority of the oysters have been taken from St. Joe Reef,” Miller said. “Also, weather conditions will begin deteriorating Thursday, and that was another factor we considered when making this decision.”
Fishermen relocated 40,000 sacks of oysters during the three-day program.

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is dedicated to enhancing, protecting and conserving marine interests of the state by managing all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands and waterfront areas to provide for the optimal commercial, recreational, educational and economic uses of these resources consistent with environmental concerns and social changes.
