Gov. Bryant cuts ribbon on first completed outfall projects on Mississippi Gulf Coast

BILOXI, Miss. – Gov. Phil Bryant and local officials were on hand today to cut the ribbon for the opening of the first beach storm water outfalls on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Constructed in Harrison County between the Biloxi-Ocean Springs bridge and I-110, the first three outfalls in the project were built over existing pipes along the sand beach. The beach storm water outfalls, which are being built to help reduce the number of pipes along the beach, are being constructed using funds received through the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA).

“These new water outfalls along the Mississippi Gulf Coast have dramatically improved the visual aesthetic along our beaches and will reduce sand erosion,” said Gov. Bryant. “I’m excited to see the final product come to fruition.”

With assistance from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR), the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and the Mississippi Development Authority, the project provides greater appeal to the beach in Harrison County and helps to eliminate a large number of these outfall pipes.

“We hope the addition of these outfalls helps to highlight our scenic Mississippi Gulf Coast,” said MDMR Executive Director Joe Spraggins. “Now that we have three outfalls completed, we would like to continue similar projects in each of our coastal counties.”

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is dedicated to enhancing, protecting and conserving marine interests of the state by managing all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands and waterfront areas to provide for the optimal commercial, recreational, educational and economic uses of these resources consistent with environmental concerns and social changes.
