BILOXI, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the city of Ocean Springs will hold a public dedication ceremony at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, for a park near the city’s harbor.
The ceremony will be held at the Dr. Thomas D. McIllwain Harbor Green at the Ocean Springs Small Craft Harbor, 1709 Harbor Road.
MDMR owns the property, and the city and the Jackson County Board of Supervisors will maintain it.
The park will be named in honor of the late Thomas McIllwain, Ph.D., a marine biologist who worked at the Gulf Coast Research Lab for most of his career.
The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is dedicated to enhancing, protecting and conserving marine interests of the state by managing all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands and waterfront areas to provide for the optimal commercial, recreational, educational and economic uses of these resources consistent with environmental concerns and social changes.
