The National Marine Fisheries Service has filed notice of a proposal which requires review by the MS Department of Marine Resources to ensure compliance with the state’s approved Coastal Program under the Coastal Zone Management Act.
The applicant is proposing to extend the federal shrimp permit moratorium in the Gulf of America for 10 years. The moratorium, first established for 10 years through Amendment 13 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Shrimp Fishery of the Gulf (Shrimp FMP) and then renewed for another 10 years through Amendment 17A to the Shrimp FMP is set to expire on October 26, 2026. The moratorium was implemented to create stability and prevent overcapacity in the Gulf shrimp fishery. Amendment 19 to the Shrimp FMP and this proposed rule would extend the moratorium for 10 years, to expire on October 26, 2036, for commercial shrimp vessels in the Gulf. Amendment 19 can be found at: https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/action/amendment-19-shrimp-permit-moratorium. View this proposed rule at the link(s) below labeled ‘Consistency Certification’.
