NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service has filed notice of a proposed regulation change which requires review by the MS Department of Marine Resources to ensure compliance with the state’s approved Coastal Program under the Coastal Zone Management Act.
The applicant is proposing promulgate regulations to modify the recreational and commercial size limit from 8-inch total length (TL) to 10-inch TL for Gulf lane snapper. According to the proposal submitted for review, the Gulf Council approved this action for review and implementation at their April 2025 meeting and these regulations are based on the most recent stock assessment, recommendations from the Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee, and are intended to reduce the risk of overfishing while better constraining harvest to the stock annual catch limit.
