The aquaculture facility in Lyman is a MDMR-operated property that focuses on aquaculture restoration and commercial aquaculture opportunities. It is situated on 214 acre and consists of 14 half-acre lined ponds and 11 earthen ponds. These ponds range in various sizes, from a quarter-acre to 12 acres and total 30 and one-acres of water.
HATCHERY BENEFITS
Operations at the Lyman aquaculture facility are critical to the sustainability of marine fisheries, as well as important to Mississippi’s economy. The hatchery helps create marketable products by developing techniques that can be transferred to the private sector for commercial aquaculture. It aids recreational fisheries by restoring and enhancing fish populations through the release of cultured organisms to enhance, restore and conserve these populations. Aquaculture for stock enhancement can provide a means to rebuild spawning stock biomass for species recovery.
SPOTTED SEATROUT VIE TAGGING
The MDMR is currently tagging seatrout through our Stock Enhancement Programs to obtain valuable data contributing to effective conservation efforts and sustainable fisheries management. These tagged fish will help the MDMR assess recruitment of released seatrout into wild populations in the efforts of stock enhancement. We are asking the public’s help with reporting Speckled Trout caught with VIE tags.
