OFF-BOTTOM OYSTER AQUACULTURE

To revive the Mississippi oyster industry following various natural and man-made disasters, the MDMR launched the Off-Bottom Oyster Aquaculture (OBOA) Program. OBOA involves cultivating oysters in mesh containers (such as baskets, bags, or cages) suspended above the seafloor. Unlike naturally formed clumps found in the wild, oysters raised in this manner are typically hatchery-reared single set individuals. Properly managed containers offer protection from predators and prevent sediment burial, enabling oyster growth in previously unsuitable areas. Although off-bottom aquaculture demands significant investments of time, labor, and capital, it holds promise for consistently supplying premium-quality oysters for the half-shell market. The MDMR program provides comprehensive training in oyster aquaculture techniques for future harvesters and supports existing harvesters in their entrepreneurial pursuits.
