ATLANTIC TRIPLETAIL

PLEASE REPORT ANY TAGGED TRIPLETAIL TO THE MDMR SPORT FISH HOTLINE NUMBER AT 844-704-2359.

ABOUT THE MIGRATORY RESEARCH

Marine fisheries staff are utilizing a Sport Fish Restoration grant to study and track Atlantic Tripletail using pop-up satellite tags. Data from these tags will provide substantial information on migratory patterns and seasonal movements of Atlantic Tripletail. Atlantic Tripletail can be found in Mississippi state waters in the warmer months of the year, which is when the species is widely believed to spawn.  Atlantic Tripletail are not known to inhabit Mississippi state waters in the cooler months of the year, and little is known about their preferred habitat usage during that period. Gaining a better understanding of these migratory patterns will help MDMR Fisheries staff better manage this increasingly popular sport fish.

Tagging efforts were conducted from August 21 to September 30, 2019.  Ten fish were equipped with satellite tags and these were the first Atlantic Tripletail to receive satellite tags in the Gulf of Mexico.

The satellite tags are programmed to record location, water temperature and depth readings for each fish through Spring 2020. Results from the satellite tags will be displayed as data arrives and is verified.
