MDMR VIE TAGGING

Since 2023, the MDMR Lyman Fish Hatchery has released Spotted Seatrout (Speckled Trout) and Southern Flounder with visible implant elastomer tags (VIE).  VIE tagging is a widely used technique in fisheries research and management that allows for the identification and monitoring of individual fish. The MDMR is currently tagging seatrout and flounder through our Stock Enhancement Programs to obtain valuable data contributing to effective conservation efforts and sustainable fisheries management. These tagged fish will help the MDMR assess recruitment of released seatrout and flounder into wild populations in the efforts of stock enhancement. We are asking the public’s help with reporting Speckled Trout or Flounder caught with VIE tags.

WHAT IS VIE TAGGING?

VIE tags are made of a flexible elastomeric material that is injected beneath the skin of the fish, typically in a visible location such as the caudal or tail fin. These tags come in various colors, enabling researchers and anglers to easily identify and differentiate between individuals. The tags are durable and can remain visible for several years, making them a reliable option for long-term studies.  VIE tagged seatrout and flounder will have one or two lines in the caudal fin. These lines could be orange, pink, or yellow. Each color determines what year the fish was hatched.

WHAT TO DO IF I CATCH A TAGGED SEATROUT OR FLOUNDER?

The most important information is the color of the tag, approximate location where the fish was caught and approximate size (weight and/or length). MDMR is not requiring samples from the fish, so you are free to keep your catch if it is of legal size. We welcome reporting of undersized fish caught and released as well.
