NOAA to perform courtesy TED checks May 30-31

18-23-MMS| May 24, 2018

BILOXI, Miss. – Representatives from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will perform courtesy checks of Turtle Excluder Devices on May 30-31.

Canh Nguyen and Jason Letort, NOAA Fisheries gear specialists, will visit Mississippi docks to check that TEDs are installed at the proper angle to minimize shrimp loss and release sea turtles.

These courtesy checks will take only several minutes per device, but fishermen should prepare by hanging their nets with TEDs a few feet above the deck.

Below is a tentative schedule and is subject to change based on how many boats participate. Call Nguyen at 228-549-1773 with any questions.

May 30: 9 a.m. to noon, Pass Christian Harbor; 1-4 p.m., Biloxi Small Craft Harbor

May 31: 9 a.m. to noon, Biloxi (C.F. Gollott and St. Michael’s docks); 1-4 p.m., Ocean Springs Small Craft Harbor.
